INTRODUCTION: My single turbo Supra project started as bone stock '93 6-speed, with 41,000 miles on the odometer. It took approximately 9 months to complete, as I have took my time and personally did all the assembly/labor. It was a great learning experience, as I got to explore complete 2JZ-GTE setup first-hand (both mechanical and electrical).
| GENERAL: The main building block was a Sweintek Racing (San Antonio, TX) 2JZ shortblock. Mike @ Sweintek Racing has massaged my stock block, bored it .020" over, then installed oversized forged JE pistons and strong lightweight Crower connecting rods. Cylinder head has been modified by Race Car Service (Pittsburgh, PA), and features mild street port/polish, complimented by Schneider Racing IN/EX 272 camshafts. Cams are one-off, and were custom built for my car. Out the box they yield 50 RWHP over HKS 272 cam power output, no adjustable cam gears required. Other misc additions include ARP head studs, TRD low-temp thermostat, and completely eliminated factory EGR and TRAC systems.
GReddy T-78 single turbo kit conversion package was chosen due to very competitive price, robustness/durability and proven track record. Intake charge is pressurized and cooled down by massive 4-row GReddy FMIC, while excess boost is released via two GReddy Type R blow-off valves, both featuring stiffer valve spring. Exhaust system features APEXi (GT Spec) and HKS (mid-pipe) components. Upgraded fuel system was assembled by Sweintek Racing, and features 720cc/min Denso injectors, Paxton adjustable FuelPressure Regulator, HKS dual-feed center-return fuel rail, full-length SS braides lines with EARL's fittings, dual stock fuel pumps and redundant inline fuse/relay protection.
Electronic air/fuel/ignition control package is pretty much standard, proven old school approach - HKS Vein Pressure Converter, HKS Graphic Control Computer, HKS TwinPower DLI Ignition amplifier, GReddy peakhold/warning gauges (EGT, Fuel Pressure and even the ultra-rare 3-BAR boost gauge), etc. Engine functions and potential system error codes are monitored by carbon-fiber Techtom MDM-100 electronic performance meter. Driveline upgrades include WOTM AZ 6-puck clutch and 1-piece steel driveshaft. Factory flywheel has been kept in order to maintain the healthy rotational mass while reducing chatter/noise commonly associated with aftermarket clutch assemblies.
Suspension has completely been redone as well, with TEIN Type HA adjustable coilovers, TRD sway bars and Cusco strut tower braces. Stopping is controlled by Brembo cross-drilled and slotted brake rotors, paired with HAWK Blue brake pads. Motul brake fluid and TRD stainless steel brake lines control the boiling point and pedal pressure. Car is rolling on classic 18" Kinesis 3-piece Supercup rims, 10.5" wide in the back. Tires are high performance Toyo Proxes T1-S, 295/35 in the back. Drag racing setup uses 16" Bogart rims with Mickey Thompson tubbed ET Streets riveted to the rim. Two stock spare rims/tires act as "skinnes" upfront.
Other misc parts have been introduced to dress-up the engine bay, and interior. Seats have been converted to black Corbeau Carrera reclineable racing seats, seat belts replaced with Simpson 3" racing harnesses, glovebox reorganized to house VPC/GCC/2-step and one GReddy gauge. Factory spark plug cover has been painted to match the body, and polished heat shield has been installed on top of the GReddy turbocharger.
Body lines have been updated with Type RZ body kit (side skirts, rear apron), together with Wings West front lip. All body/detail work has been done locally by ACE. Glass has been treated using "Limo-only" 3% window tint.
Currently, car is being switched over to AEM Engine Management System. |
