GENERAL:
My very first Supra was a '91 MKIII Turbo purchased back in '96. Since I was still in college, I was not fortunate enough to buy an MKIV by myself(even though my dad bought the MKIII). When I was younger, I never imagined that I could ever own an MKIV, but after owning the MKIII for five good years (and saving loads of cash), I began the search for my MKIV.
     At that time, the only cars I wanted were MKIV Supra and Skyline GTR (R32 or R33). They were my only choices, and no other cars could have persuaded my decision. Since couple of guys I knew had GTR's, it wasn't too difficult to examine the full potential of the car. Not to mention one simple roller coaster ride in Motorex's R32 (car had minor mods- fuel, stock turbos) was almost enough to make up my mind. However in the end, the plain old fact on Supra's capability of squeezing out tons of power on stock block, plus availability on parts for the car out-weighed GTR by a long shot (plus building the RB26 would've cost a lot more). Personally still to this day, I prefer the GTR over Supras, but I had to stick with my Toyota roots before playing with the GTR. I searched and searched, since I was specifically after a black on black 6 spd, bone stock, or mildly tuned one...but people might understand, that it was almost impossible to find the right car. In early 2001 through friends, I found my MKIV. The car owned by the owner of XS Engineering was built and tuned at the site. The first time I saw the car was on the dyno. The car screamed, and I was simply amazed with the power. I was still a little hesitant, since the car was little built than I originally wanted to be. However, since it was through a reliable source and it was among friends, I considered it (plus I had plans to run the twin set up from the start). The exterior was clean, couple of dents here and there, but nothing major. Interior was pretty much flawless with brand new Recaro's. I was really impressed with the quality of the job XS had done, but mostly, the pure, raw power the car had. The pull on 3rd + gears was nothing I ever felt from my previous cars, nor from any of my friends cars. One quick ride in shotgun for 10 mins., and me driving for another 10, I was basically sold. I bought the car in May 2001 with motor pretty much done, but with stock exterior.
ENGINE:
The car had more than enough power for driving around town. I was still driving my MKIII as a daily, and kept my MKIV in the garage. It was sweet to have 2 Supras for little while, but it was time for the MKIII to leave the garage.
     There wasn't too much I wanted to do with the motor, at least performance wise yet...so I decided to enjoy it as is. I've raced several cars when I had the car, but nothing really came close. Just to name a few they were...WRX, Stangs, Camaros, Z06/C-5's, Vipers, new Porsche TT, (but never an MKIV) and of course, HONDAS! (sometimes they just asked for it). I was done with the whole street race scene, and didn't really drive the car at night for reasons (cops/idiots)...so come to think of it, I didn't run into lot of fast cars.
BRAKES/CHASSIS:
As for the brakes, since I couldn't upgrade the calipers, I tried out Powerslot rotors with Top Secret brake pads. I think stock TT rotors work better than Powerslots, so I wouldn't really recommend people making that switch. As for the Top Secret brake pads, they stopped ok, but squeaked way too much. I would NOT recommend these to anyone. For street application, go buy Hawks. I know a lot of sport/race pads squeak, but the TS one's were the worst I've heard in a while. I hated them. Not enough performance for the squeaks...It was embarrassing going to shopping malls and let that squeak loose in parking lots. Every stop sign, or even slowing down for people crossing the street was a challenge all by itself. I even had little ricer kids tell me to get new brakes...very embarrassing. No wonder the brake pads were so damn cheap!
EXTERIOR:
I began searching for rims right after I bought the car. Since I had stock chromies, and I was all for "No Fat Chrome" theory, I needed replacement right away. I was only considering 3pc wheels with a fat lip in the rear, and I also needed 19's. I wasn't running it on the track, nor was I circuit racing, therefore I wanted to emphasize mostly on appearance. Through searching and seeing my options, I was determined to getting Work Rezax II's at first. I was flying to Japan for business several times a year, so it wasn't a problem picking them up. Also, the dollar to yen ratio was awesome then. However, shipping over to US was another story...I tried fixing up schedules with my buddy with a shop over here, to have them shipped with his products...but that became too much of a hassle. Then one day, I found 19" RH type C2's with brand new tires for sale for decent price. The only catches - the front wheels were 19x8.5 (I wanted 9"+) and the offset didn't allow caliper upgrades... and I wanted fatter lip in the rear. But seemed like a better deal overall than RezaxII, so I went with it. When I bought the wheels, I already had Do-Luck bumper ordered from Japan, and I had Blitz side skirts ready to be put on. The front bumper shipment lagged...for good 7-8 month I waited. Finally came in early 2002, and thankfully no Supra owner in the States still had it(I think...). Anyway, one thing about the Do-Luck bumper that killed me was how low it sat. Getting in drive ways wasn't that difficult, but getting out was another story. The bumper sat low, but most of all, the nose came out more than others. It was a pain in the ass going places and worry about scraping everywhere. The bumper looks great, but definitely not the bumper you want for daily driving. As for the Blitz side skirts, I really didn't like the section which came up to the fenders, so I cut them off. I really didn't find anything I liked for the rear at that time, so I decided to leave it plain in the back. With the body kit, I also invested in Kou-ki tail lights, head lights, and blinkers. I shaved off the rear trunk section where it had "Toyota, Supra, and Toy mark" to have plainer look. I actually liked the stock wing, so I kept it as is.
PERFORMANCE:
550rwhp and 432.9lbs rwtq on pump gas (92 oct) @ 1.3kg
6xx rwhp on race fuel
719rwhp on proper tuning
EXTRA:
I thought of building the motor to squeeze out around 1K hp, amongst other things (swapping out the wheels, brakes, suspension, etc.)...but the plans have changed. I decided to sell the car.
     During the time when the car was for sale, a lot of people were concerned because the car didn't have air filters. I wasn't too worried about it, since I was driving around town mostly (L.A., and not desert), and I had mesh screens over the turbos. Anyway, I decided to ask Signal Auto to install custom intakes with HKS Megaflows. It was a tight squeeze fitting the 2nd intake for the rear turbo, but somehow managed to fit. HKS megaflow wasn't my favorite (I think K&N has better flow than HKS), but since it was a tight squeeze, they were the best bet.
     Well, the car finally sold in March/April of 2003. I miss it, but it's the right decision at this point in my life. I hope sites such as T04R.COM will keep expanding with new Supras and help develop and create new ideas for owners and other car enthusiasts. After all, it's the diverse range of ideas and concepts which keeps everything alive.
