GENERAL: Back in 1997 my brother was buying a car at a Toyota dealership and I saw a brand new red 6 speed Supra sitting in the showroom floor. This was the first time I had ever even seen a MKIV Supra or at least one up close. I really liked the aggressive body lines and jet fighter type cockpit for the driver. I also thought “WOW rated at 320hp 315tq… it must be crazy fast” which is funny because that’s the way non-car type people think when they first buy a car. I was only 18 years old so I knew nothing about cars and how they worked. I only knew that I would HAVE to buy one soon. So I began to do research on the car (mostly MKIV.COM and MKIV mailing lists) and started looking for one. Let me take a timeout to say that the people responsible for MKIV.COM and the MKIV mailing lists deserve the biggest pat on the back from the MKIV Supra community for what they have done.
I knew during the search that it would have to be black and a 6 speed. It was a very rare car and still is to this day..another reason why I liked it. I finally found a black 6 speed driven by an older gentleman who was having back problems and decided it was time for a Jaguar Type-S in San Francisco after searching day after day in all the classifieds online and newspapers for about 6 months. The next day I went to go check it out. This was my first time driving manual after learning how to drive at 15 on a 5speed Celica that my brother taught me with. Also this was my first time driving a Supra as well as any REAL performance type car. I was driving mostly hand me down crappy 1980’s Corollas and Celicas since I was 16.
So therefore, I was a bit nervous when he gave me the keys to this car for a test drive in the crappy hills and roads of San Francisco! But it was all good. I could tell the owner maintained it well so I told him I’ll take it. He wouldn’t budge on the price because the demand on the car was very high! He told me he had his neighbor coming to take a look at it and a few appointments the next day. I came back the next day and gave him the check. It was mine at last! Yes! But I was busy at work so I had my brother pickup the car for me and when I got home I couldn’t stop looking at or sitting in it. I actually slept in it the first night I got it! :)
At first I was too busy to enjoy the car because going to college full time and working full time. So I basically used it as a daily driver. What a shame! Soon after a few years it became only my nice day/weekend car as I picked up a daily driver. I’ve had some very fun times with this car. From 5 years ago bone stock to the present and the way it is now. Ill just put it this way and say that the car has never let me down. It has done what I’ve wanted it to do and then some. I enjoy this car because it can and will do MANY things and do it well. I have gone to a road course and passed many people in my class even on stock breaks, suspension and crappy Nitto NT555 tires. I use it to drive the beautiful California mountain roads with my friends. I use it to go cruise to the malls, clubs and get the groceries too :) I have raced people on private test tracks and destroyed them to the point of their amazement - and sometimes they knew the likely outcome beforehand.
I’ve raced all kinds of cars such as super lightweight Shelby Cobras, Nitrous and Supercharged C5 Corvettes, Lambos, Porsche 996TT’s, Vipers, Lotus V8TT’s, NSX’s, 300ZX Twin Turbos, RX7 Twin Turbos etc etc and have met a ton of people who just are good “car people” and have made many friends because of this car. That is one of the main things that I've loved about this car eventhough its not an actual physical functioning “part” of the car. But the most fun I’ve had with the car have all been in my videos. The chance to race (on private test tracks ofcourse) such exotics like Lamborghini Diablos and Murcielagos as well as such beasts as a Suzuki GSXR1000 sportbike has been really fun. The feel of racing other cars and bikes to such extreme speeds is a rush that can and will leave your hands shaking afterwards. There should be some more “interesting” videos coming in the near future. As well maybe some changes to the car too. So stay tuned! :) |
ENGINE: The first turbo I had on the car was a Sound Performance SP63 P-trim with a .70 A/R exhaust housing (aka PTE63) which was a great turbo. Spooled like stock and had a ton of torque and power with a nice power band even with the weak stock 6,800 RPM rev limiter. This turbo hit full boost about 3800rpm on in 4th gear on the street and did about 600rwhp and 635rwtq SAE at 24psi so it was practically like stock! This was the turbo I used when I raced the Diablo and Murcielago. I would recommend this turbo or any of the 57-66 mm turbos on a 2JZ-GTE motor for good spool and a wide powerband. Next I had a Turbonetics T-72 P-trim with a .70 A/R exhaust housing. This turbo was pretty good and was the turbo I ran when I raced the Suzuki GSXR1000 but I never really got a chance to dyno this turbo on moderate boost but once again I sold it to try out a new Garrett turbo.
The turbo is a custom Garrett GT42 supplied to me by Garrett and ATPTurbo. The specs on this turbocharger are 94mm compressor and 82mm turbine with a 1.06 A/R exhaust housing and the intake on the compressor is 5 inches! One way to describe this turbo would be “MASSIVE” but it also uses the latest technology applied by Garrett engineers or order to be efficient produce good power and torque as well as spool up better than older technology turbos. It also has a V-Band on both the compressor and turbine side so it is so easy to take on and off! Very cool. Older style turbos have cumbersome bolts on the compressor and turbine instead. Very uncool.
The clutch I am currently running is the HPF Sprung Hub Clutch. It does chatter but it revs nicely and shifts very smoothly! Only time will tell if it holds up. As of right now the engine is still COMPLETELY stock with 113,000 miles on it. This means the cams, head, intake manifold, and bottom end are all Toyota OEM from the factory 10+ years ago with 113,00 miles on it. Although, I do admit 95% of the miles on VERY soft commuting freeway miles on them. Also I am still running a tiny 3” midepipe/downpipe and exhaust. I would like to see how much power/torque it would gain if I dropped in some cams, ported the head, make a 4” midpipe/downpipe and exhaust as well as up the boost. |
FUEL: The fuel system consists of the Titan Motorsports big fuel rail along with 1000CC Dephi Injectors. An extra -6 AN line running parallel to the stock -6 line and dual high flow and psi Walbro pumps. I was running two stock Denso pumps but both of them failed on me. One was the stock one with 113k miles on it and one was a brand new one. I don’t know if this is problem when running too much psi on the pumps but if one pump were to fail on a high boost run then it would run totally lean risking the motor. All I know is I trust the Walbro pumps a lot more than I do the stock Denso pumps. Also the Walbros take less power to run the stock Densos. I run two 10 gauge wires from both Walbros to two separate 40 AMP relays. I installed a custom Water/Alchohol/Methanol system with a 1.5 gallon tank that fits snug right behind my driver’s seat. I think 650rwhp is quite possible with this system on pure California 91 octane piss water with my setup. I will be testing this soon. |
ELECTRONICS: Running the typical HKS VPC and GCC combo piggyback stuff. As well as a modified G-Force ECU with a 8k RPM rev limiter and your typical boost cut and speed cut limiter removed. So far even with HKS VPC and 1000CC injectors I have had no idle problems. Also I removed the Traction Control butterfly and Traction ECU. |
BRAKES/CHASSIS: Brakes are new stock OEM brakes and pads. Considering the weight of a stock Supra it is quite a good set of OEM brakes. Maybe go with a set of Carbotech Panther Plus pads or maybe 14” Stoptech brakes but only if I were to track the car a lot. The car used to run 18” Volk Challenges but I decided that 18”s are too small for the MKIV Supra body and am now running 19” Volk GT-7’s in Gunmetal and polished lip wrapped in Pirelli P-ZERO rubber. Have BFG drag radials on some 17 inch rims when I need traction. |
INTERIOR: The interior is very much stock. Both the Greddy Boost Gauge and EGT are located in the stock clock and A/C vent location. People think just because you don’t have a billion gauges everywhere hanging out that your car is basically stock. I’d to like to keep it that way. I will never have a cage in the car because of that. |
EXTERIOR: The exterior is basically stock with exception to upgrading all the taillights, headlights, front blinkers to new 1997/1998 specs. As well as de-badging Toyota and Supra logos on the rear of the car. I like the clean look. Also my favorite spoiler has always been the Rod Millen Carbon Fiber spoiler since seeing one 1999. It just goes well with the stock MKIV Supra body lines. |
PERFORMANCE: On 1/12/04 ---- It did 748.6 RWHP and 661.4 RWTQ SAE at 25PSI, stock cams, heads, intake manifold, 113k mile bottom end and a 3”midpipe/downpipe and exhaust. No Nitrous injected or sprayed on the intercooler. As well as no cool down before a 20mile drive. It should be interesting to see what it does with 30+PSI, bigger cams, ported head, bigger intake manifold, and 4” midpipe/downpipe and exhaust! Maybe even a little Nitrous just for fun :) |
